A recent national survey conducted by Savanta for Ocado Retail, which included 2,200 UK adults, revealed that nearly half of all respondents reported an increase in protein intake over the past year. Among individuals aged 16 to 34, the percentage was even higher, with two-thirds acknowledging a shift toward protein-heavy diets.
Social media has played a significant role in this trend, particularly among Gen Z. The study found that nearly 50% of Gen Z individuals turn to platforms like Instagram and TikTok for dietary inspiration, compared to 35% of Millennials and only 5% of Baby Boomers. As a result, online grocer Ocado has observed a dramatic increase in searches for high-protein foods, with the number doubling since 2023.
Cottage Cheese and Chicken Among Top Choices
Among the most sought-after protein sources, cottage cheese has seen a 97% rise in demand, spurred largely by viral trends on TikTok. Greek yogurt has also experienced a 56% increase in searches, further solidifying the growing preference for high-protein dairy products. Meanwhile, chicken breast, a staple for many seeking lean protein, has witnessed a 43% surge in searches, while steak searches rose by 39% and tuna by 35%. Additionally, egg whites, often favored for their low-calorie, high-protein content, saw a 27% increase in interest, all contributing to the overall rise in protein consumption.
Plant-based protein sources have also gained traction. Searches for chickpeas increased by 27%, and searches rose by 18%, indicating a rising awareness of alternative protein options. Nicola Waller, buying director at Ocado Retail, noted that protein is no longer exclusively associated with bodybuilders but has become a fundamental component of a balanced diet for individuals looking to maintain their overall health and wellness.
