Key Takeaway:
- Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Medicine Prize for pioneering optogenetics research.
- Optogenetics uses light to control nerve cells, helping scientists study brain functions linked to learning, fear, addiction, and movement.
- The technique could also advance medical technologies, including more precise cochlear implants.
American scientist Karl Deisseroth and Germans Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Medicine Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries that advanced understanding of the brain through optogenetics.
Scientists Discover Molecular Switch For Nerve Cells
The Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced Monday that the three scientists were honored “for their discovery of a molecular switch for nerve cells.” Their work established methods for controlling nerve-cell activity using light.
Deisseroth, 54, is a professor at Stanford University. Hegemann, 71, is a neuroscience professor at Humboldt University of Berlin, while Nagel, 73, is a biophysics professor at the University of Würzburg.
The laureates will share a prize of 12 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million. The Nobel Assembly said all three expressed appreciation for receiving the award alongside their colleagues and friends.
Optogenetics Helps Researchers Study The Brain
Optogenetics allows researchers to control nerve signals with light, enabling them to examine how specific types of brain cells contribute to behaviors such as learning, fear, addiction and movement.
“Optogenetics has fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain,” the Nobel Assembly said, adding that the technique is helping researchers investigate how the brain works.
Thomas Perlmann, secretary-general of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute, said the method allows scientists to “switch on, or off, the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain.”
The technique is now used in laboratories worldwide to study brain function. Per Svenningsson, chair of the Nobel committee, said optogenetics provides opportunities to map the brain in ways researchers previously could only imagine.
Research Could Improve Brain And Hearing Treatments
Beyond laboratory research, scientists are investigating whether optogenetics could support new medical technologies. Researchers hope the approach could improve cochlear implants by enabling more precise stimulation of the auditory nerve than current electrical devices.
The prize recognizes discoveries made across several stages of research into light-sensitive proteins and their use in controlling nerve cells. Together, the scientists’ work helped turn optogenetics into a widely used research method.
The medicine prize traditionally opens the annual Nobel announcements. The physics prize is announced Tuesday, followed by chemistry Wednesday and literature Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled for Friday and is awarded in Oslo.
Nobel laureates receive their awards Dec. 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, during ceremonies attended by Sweden’s and Norway’s royal families. Banquets are held in their honor.
