Israeli airstrikes strike Gandhi Hospital in northern Tehran on Sunday, damaging parts of the facility and prompting patient evacuations, according to Reuters and Iranian news agencies, as fighting between Israel and Iran intensifies.

Witnesses Describe Damage, Patients Evacuated

Iran’s ISNA news agency says the hospital was struck in what it calls “Zionist-American air strikes”in an incident where Israeli airstrikes hit Tehran hospital. Separate reports from Fars and Mizan include video showing debris scattered across hospital floors near wheelchairs and medical equipment.

Two witnesses in the Gandhi Street area tell Reuters the hospital sustained significant damage. They say patients are evacuated from the building shortly after the blasts.

Explosions continue into Sunday night across Tehran as the operation expands, residents report.

There is no immediate official statement from Iranian health authorities on casualties at the hospital.

Israel Says 100 Jets Target Government Sites

The Israeli military says the hospital strike occurs during a broader operation targeting central areas of Tehran. In a briefing, Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin says 100 fighter jets strike government sites simultaneously.

“The targets include structures linked to Iran’s air force, missile command and internal security forces,” Defrin says. He says the sites are connected to military operations and to forces that suppress protests in January, in an operation during which Israeli airstrikes hit Tehran hospital.

Israeli officials do not immediately address the reported damage to the hospital.

The joint campaign follows earlier strikes that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, according to Iranian state media.

Iran Forms Leadership Council, Launches Retaliatory Strikes

Earlier Sunday, Iran appointed a 66-year-old cleric to a three-member leadership council tasked with governing until a new supreme leader is chosen.

The council includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehei, and Ayatollah Ali Reza Arafi. In a state television broadcast, Pezeshkian confirms the council begins its duties.

“We will continue governing within the framework of the constitution,” Pezeshkian says, according to state TV.

In response to the Israeli strikes, Iran launches missiles and drones at Israel, U.S. military bases in the Gulf region, the Saudi capital of Riyadh, and Dubai, according to Iranian media and regional reports. There is no immediate confirmation of damage from U.S. or Saudi officials.

The escalating exchange marks one of the most confrontational exchanges between Israel and Iran in years and raises concerns about a wider regional conflict involving U.S. forces and Gulf states.

Explosions are reported in several areas of Tehran late Sunday, while air defense systems are activated in parts of the capital, residents say.

The situation remains fluid as both sides continue military operations and regional governments monitor developments.
