Apheris Secures €20.1 million in a Series A funding round, strengthening its mission to empower secure and collaborative data networks in the life sciences sector. Led by European DeepTech investors OTB Ventures and eCAPITAL, the funding round also saw participation from existing backers Octopus Ventures and Heal Capital.

Apheris CEO Robin Röhm expressed his excitement about the new partnerships, highlighting the investors’ deep understanding of high-security, advanced technology products. “With their support, we aim to unlock the potential of AI and machine learning in the life sciences industry by addressing the critical bottleneck of accessing large and diverse data,” Röhm stated. The startup’s innovative Compute Gateway allows AI models to be trained on sensitive data without moving it, making regulatory and commercial hurdles manageable. Pharmaceutical giants like Roche and Johnson & Johnson, along with hospitals, have already adopted Apheris’ technology.

Apheris secures a significant advantage in the healthcare industry with its federated computing technology, addressing the challenge where 97% of data remains unused due to trust and privacy concerns. By facilitating secure data collaboration while safeguarding intellectual property, Apheris taps into a market valued at over €29 billion.

The fresh funding will enable Apheris to scale its operations, expand its network of biopharmaceutical clients, and deploy foundational AI models. The startup plans to host state-of-the-art models, including protein-complex-prediction systems, leveraging previously inaccessible training data stored in private repositories. These developments aim to drive breakthroughs in AI-driven research and innovation, providing end-to-end functionality for critical life sciences use cases.
