A groundbreaking partnership between Aston University and Catalent, a renowned contract medicine manufacturer, has yielded a faster and more efficient process for identifying optimal ingredients in medicine formulations. Recognized as outstanding by Innovate UK, this collaboration represents a significant advancement in pharmaceutical innovation.

Development of a Novel Approach

Catalent, a global leader in pharmaceutical solutions, specializes in optimizing product development and supply for patients worldwide. One of its proprietary technologies, the Zydis orally dissolving tablet (ODT), allows for rapid drug absorption through mouth tissues. However, challenges arise in ensuring effective absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the formulation. To address this, Aston University and Catalent initiated a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to devise a swifter and more precise method for identifying suitable additives, known as excipients, to enhance drug absorption.

Success and Future Prospects

Led by Professor Afzal Mohammed from Aston University’s School of Pharmacy, the project leveraged the expertise of various researchers to develop a selection matrix. This innovative tool enables Catalent’s formulation scientists to quickly pinpoint excipients based on API properties, streamlining the drug development process. Desmond Wong, product development supervisor at Catalent, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s success, emphasizing its potential to expedite product development and enhance client satisfaction. Professor Mohammed echoed this sentiment, highlighting plans to submit the project for a KTP award and expressing eagerness to continue collaborating with Catalent on future endeavors.
